Music On Your Own Terms 138 - Alex Krug Combo - Asheville Rebel
Chatting with me this time out is Alex Krug from the Alex Krug Combo, all the way from Ashville, NC. We hear about how early memories of her grandmother playing piano with Alex, shaped her love of music, how she grew up learning guitar and drums, started writing her own music, and played drums in a grunge band as a teen. We also hear about the process of writing and recording with the combo, how her drummer Bill recorded several sessions for Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks album, Alex's thoughts on prejudice in the music scene, and finally the challenges she's experienced over the course of the pandemic as a gigging musician.

Joining me in this long overdue interview, is the master shredder of Killbot Zero himself, Mr. Chris Cavera. Chris shares his musical history, how he writes music, and of course we disappear down the obligatory guitar gear rabbit hole! We also chat about how Chris got into teaching, how he approaches improving his playing and learning new techniques, as well as delving into his experience dealing with mental health issues.

Music On Your Own Terms 125 - Martin Atkins - The Secret To Success Is Unneutered Zombie Kittens
It is with great pleasure that I present my interview with the one and only Martin Atkins, drummer for Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, Ministry, his own band Pigface, entrepreneur, college lecturer, author, and international speaker. Martin talks about his journey, from his dad getting him a drum kit and setting him up with gigs, the early punk scene and joining PIL, to noticing the mismanagement of the bands, he was in and turning their finances around through merch. We learn about how Martin got into teaching students through his experiences with touring and the music business, writing books based on those classes, how that led to talking at music festivals, and the impetus of turning the collections of memorabilia from the past 40 plus years into a museum. We also find out how Ivar Bjornson, guitarist for the Norwegian band Enslaved, taught Martin the importance of saying YES, to everything.

Music On Your Own Terms 107 - Steven Volpp and Dweezil Zappa - A Rewarding Conversation
Joining me this episode is Acme Marketing CEO, Steven Volpp, and the legendary Dweezil Zappa, to talk about their new venture Reward Music. Reward is a full service platform that gives artists all the tools they need to host their music, media, website, and everything else required to connect with fans in order to make a living from their art, without having to give everything away on social media and streaming platforms. Steve starts us off talking about the platform, his history in the music business, including launching his patented Radial drum system with Peavey, which led to working with Dweezil on his Wiggy amp. He also talks about the development of the platform that Reward now runs on, including a number of other businesses that use it. Dweezil joins us about halfway through to talk about the challenges that artists face today especially during a pandemic, and how the platform will benefit anyone who wants to make a living from something creative, even outside music.

Music On Your Own Terms 101 - Marketing 101 With J-Mac & J-Mo
Kicking off 2021, we take a deep dive into marketing for artists with my good friends Jonathan McNary and Jonathan Moore, from the McGrath Project, and Fiction Theory. The two Jonathans talk about their background in this subject, how it has impacted their efforts with various musical projects, and what they have learned in the process. Along the way we look at a couple of examples of boosting social media posts, when to pay for advertising and when not to, and also some alternative strategies that don't cost money, but may be a lot more effective.
