Music On Your Own Terms 071 - Dan Clayton/Fret Success - Still Being Himself
We are both guitar nerds, and we both left the UK to live in North America. Dan Clayton is an acoustics engineer based in Calgary, Canada, that also records his own music, mixes others', and is the founder of Fret Success, an online resource for guitar players looking to improve their skills. Dan shares his journey from asking his parents for saxophone lessons and inheriting his dad's guitar instead, opening for some popular touring bands in the UK, and why he moved to Canada. We also have a nerdy gear discussion about guitars, amps, plugins and pedals.

Music On Your Own Terms 068 - Joe Messina – Politics, Porpoises, and Phallic Humor
In this episode, we learn about the history of Boston based guitarist, comedian, podcaster, activist and teacher, Joe Messina. From growing up in a musical family and not wanting to follow the family business, to discovering comedy and wanting to become an aspiring writer, he was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Despite almost quitting music altogether, Joe found himself embracing music once again, teaches guitar and other instruments, and is about to release his new album Rageonomics. Joe also hosts a podcast that aims to provide a roadmap for those who feel frustrated with the slow and ineffective voting system, and want to do more in the way of direct action outside of sharing posts and signing petitions.
If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants. - Isaac Newton

Music On Your Own Terms 060 - Caitlin Claessens - Super Simple Subway Stories
To celebrate the 60th episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with Caitlin Claessens, who is the face of Caitie's classroom along with her co-host Tobee, on the popular YouTube channel Super Simple Play, part of Skyship Entertainment's Super Simple Songs network, whose main channel has over 23M subscribers. Caitie talks about her journey from growing up in Ontario and going to university for film production, moving to NYC and busking on the subway, to finding session vocal jobs that ended up being featured in Superbowl Commercials. We find out why she ended up returning to Canada and went on to build a successful children's educational entertainment business and subsequently got an opportunity with Skyship to become a presenter and produce her own series.

Music On Your Own Terms 044 - Johanna Hagarty/JPH Creative - Reprise
Returning to the podcast this episode is my good friend Johanna Hagarty of JPH Creative. We find out what Johanna has been up to since episode 31 in her economic development role in the local community, and about her recent move away from event production. The bulk of the discussion however, focuses on the current corona virus situation, what it means for the creative community, ways in which we can adapt in our businesses and be mindful of our mental health during these difficult times. We talk about ways in which you can "recession-proof" your business, and taking the time to learn skills to prepare yourself for the other side of the situation. We round out the discussion looking to the future, and hear a track from one of Johanna's musical clients!

Music On Your Own Terms 043 - Shawn Patrick Thomas Daley/The Mohawk Studio & HALO Live
Based in Sandusky, Ohio, The Mohawk Studio is a 6000 square foot, 172 year old church building, that hosts not only a full service recording studio and artist accommodations, but also a live venue with a full bar. I talk to owner, operator and producer Shawn Daley, who is also the bass player for the bands The Casket Company and Half Knocked Out. We talk about his history, how the studio and venue got started and what drives his passion for music. In addition, we discuss the steps he's taking to make live concerts accessible to the world via streaming during the current Corona virus situation, and how that will help to replace band's income lost from the cancellation of most live music for the foreseeable future.
