Music On Your Own Terms 145 - Leon Todd/Ragdoll - Guitars, Gear, & Storytime With Uncle dUg
I discovered this week's guest on Youtube whilst searching for videos of one of the amps I own, really appreciating the content he is putting out, as well as our common love for the band Kings X. Leon Todd is a guitar player, Youtuber, and teacher from Perth, Australia, who tours with his band Ragdoll, teaches clinics at guitar festivals, and has a ton of great information on guitar gear, most notably the Fractal Axe FX. We discuss Leon's history, how he has built his Youtube channel, as well as his band's following around the world, including saving for trips to the US, and taking every opportunity no matter the odds they have faced as a band. Finally Leon talks about the old adage of "success is not what you know, but who you know" from his perspective, including how he met his wife, and how he got to hang out and eat dinner with dUg Pinnick from Kings X!

Music On Your Own Terms 142 - Elementals, Intercontinentals, & Thunderpetz
Hailing from Italy and Turkey, attending Berklee and the Musicians Institute, and now based in Los Angeles, Thunderpetz are truly a fusion of many styles and cultures, both musically and otherwise. In this inspiring conversation, I chat to brothers Dandy on guitar and Lorenzo on drums, as well as Guney on synths, about this brand new project that takes 80s virtuoso rock and merges it with a modern electronic sound to create Thunderpetz. The guys talk about their history of moving to the US to go to school, the various projects they've been involved in, and passionately discuss the artists that inspired them to dedicate their life to music. We also learn about the challenges of being a musician in today's crowded world, and what it takes to get your music heard with so many other people trying to do the same thing.

Music On Your Own Terms 137 - Rascal Whack - A Place For Musical Meditation
In this episode I talk to Stathis Skaloubakas of the Greek band, Rascal Whack, who released their new album Maliveni earlier this year. Stathis talks about what the title means, how the concept threads through the songs on the album, and the specific way the band writes music to maintain a coherent sound. We also learn about Stathis' day job as a lawyer, how acting classes shaped his philosophies on life, and how Green Day shaped his tastes in music.

Music On Your Own Terms 136 - Fotis Delinikolas - The Djstinguished Djentleman
We head back to Greece this episode for a chat with and incredible session guitarist, Fotis Delinikolas, who, after being ridiculously busy touring with various bands and pop singers, has finally had the time during Covid, to record a solo instrumental album, which by the way, seriously rips! Fotis talks about his musical upbringing, his career with two of Greece's most well known singers, touring and recording with a band signed to Sony Music, and now working with my good friend Ria, to promote his first solo release, Alma. We also take another trip down the guitar gear rabbit hole.....because, I tend to do that, Fotis gives his tips on how someone might go about becoming a session musician, and finally he talks about which guitar he might choose if he was offered an endorsement deal.

Music On Your Own Terms 135 - Chris Cavera - A Pre-Emptive Strike Of The Killbot
Joining me in this long overdue interview, is the master shredder of Killbot Zero himself, Mr. Chris Cavera. Regular listeners will have heard his guitar playing on pretty much every episode's intro music, as well as a few Killbot tunes, and possibly even a Brucifer track as well. Chris shares his musical history, how he writes music, and of course we disappear down the obligatory guitar gear rabbit hole! We also chat about how Chris got into teaching, how he approaches improving his playing and learning new techniques, as well as delving into his experience dealing with mental health issues.

Music On Your Own Terms 125 - Martin Atkins - The Secret To Success Is Unneutered Zombie Kittens
It is with great pleasure that I present my interview with the one and only Martin Atkins, drummer for Public Image Limited, Killing Joke, Ministry, his own band Pigface, entrepreneur, college lecturer, author, and international speaker. Martin talks about his journey, from his dad getting him a drum kit and setting him up with gigs, the early punk scene and joining PIL, to noticing the mismanagement of the bands, he was in and turning their finances around through merch. We learn about how Martin got into teaching students through his experiences with touring and the music business, writing books based on those classes, how that led to talking at music festivals, and the impetus of turning the collections of memorabilia from the past 40 plus years into a museum. We also find out how Ivar Bjornson, guitarist for the Norwegian band Enslaved, taught Martin the importance of saying YES, to everything.

Joining me this episode, from Siberia, is Pleximents mastermind, Evgen Tsibulin, a multi-instrumentalist, who used to tour in a death metal band, and whose current day job is as a guitar player for an orchestra. We discover what prompted Evgen to create the Pleximent's album The Maze Within, which is effectively a prog-metal symphony, as well as the meaning behind the track names, lyrics, and concept as a whole. Music On Your Own Terms 120 - Kostas Sampanis - Atumune In The Mountains
This episode I am joined by Greek guitarist, Kostas Sampanis, to talk about his newly released EP, Autumne. We discuss the conception of the album, which Kostas reveals is dedicated to his late grandmother, something that I really connect to on a deep emotional level, as my grandmother was very special to me as well. In addition to his EP, we also talk about Kostas' philosophies on teaching music theory and technique which is his primary source of income. Finally Kostas shares his recent experience with cancer and how music helped his time in hospital to endure the pain he was in. Once again I want to thank my friend Ria from One Woman Company for turning me on to another fantastic artist, I was absolutely blown away by Kostas' music and playing as soon as I heard it. Make sure you subscribe to Kostas' Youtube channel to check out some really tasty jams and covers.

Music On Your Own Terms 115 - Juha Ruokangas/Ruokangas Guitars - What If?
It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I present my conversation with Mr. Juha Ruokangas, of Ruokangas Guitars, Finnish luthier, innovator and life coach! Regular listeners will remember my episode with Mika Tyyskä (Mr Fastfinger) all the way back in episode 9, who not only play's Juha's instruments, is a good friend, but also created a film about the making of a Mr Fastfinger signature guitar (with Sensai's help of course). Juha shares his journey from discovering Iron Maiden and Jimmy Page, learning to both play guitar and dismantling his very first instrument, all the way to finding his calling as a luthier from a very helpful lady at the unemployment office. We hear how Juha has continued to push innovations from being at the forefront of early websites and guitar customization apps, shunning the traditional "tone woods" in favor of locally sourced materials that inspire the player to create, as well as the Valvebucker, a tube driven guitar pickup that resembles early tube microphones, resulting in a much larger frequency range by amplifying the guitar signal at its source. Finally Juha discusses his weekly Youtube livestream where he shares his thoughts on life, mindset, and mental health, from his perspective, growing up in a relatively young country whose older generations are still affected by the trauma of devastating wars during the early 1900s, as well as the long dark winters and social pressure of not sharing your feelings. This is one of the longest episodes I have released, but is truly one of the most fascinating and enjoyable, and I am truly grateful that Juha was able to share so many valuable and insightful experiences.
