Music On Your Own Terms 048 - Ian Barnett
Almost three decades ago I spent an hour almost every week for over three years learning guitar from one of South East England's top guitar teachers. These were some of my most formative years, and having the chance to interview Ian and revisit those memories has illustrated just how much of that knowledge has stuck with me on a subconscious level. Check out our chat as we reminisce, discover Ian's journey from a teenage guitar novice to a career spanning 40 years, guiding young musicians through their scales, organizing gigs for young bands at large venues, and now teaching music in a college for children with learning disabilities. Ian has a wonderful philosophy on life, education and the performance and enjoyment of music, and as a teacher has not only risen to the challenge of adapting to various learning styles, but now with the corona virus affecting our daily lives, has had to pivot in order to find ways of teaching online effectively to those students that are already impeded. On setting up this interview, I was expecting to have a conversation that included fond memories of my early teens. What I got was way more than that - a great insight into the philosophies of a fantastic teacher!

Music On Your Own Terms 047 - George Bletsas/Hypnotic Nausea
Hypnotic Nausea is a hard rock band from Athens, Greece, that has prog and art-rock leanings, heavily inspired by both Tool and grandiose concept albums from the 70s. In this chat I talk to singer and guitarist George Bletsas about the band's beginnings, their influences and sound, along with how they decide on what concepts to work on and how they compose the music. We discover the deeper meaning to their albums "Hypnosis" and their newest release "The Death of All Religions" and see what effect the current corona virus situation has had on the band writing new material.

Music On Your Own Terms 045 - Just The Tip 1 - Musicians & COVID19
This is the first installment of a new feature called "Just The Tip" where I pose a question to the musicians community including past guests, to hear their perspective on a particular subject. Given the current situation with COVID19 I decided to ask the question "What effect has the corona virus had on you as a musician, and what steps and outside of the box thinking have you utilized to make up for lost revenue, and make full use of the downtime that you are currently experiencing? Let me know your thoughts on this episode, and continue the conversation on social media!

Based in Sandusky, Ohio, The Mohawk Studio is a 6000 square foot, 172 year old church building, that hosts not only a full service recording studio and artist accommodations, but also a live venue with a full bar. I talk to owner, operator and producer Shawn Daley, who is also the bass player for the bands The Casket Company and Half Knocked Out. We talk about his history, how the studio and venue got started and what drives his passion for music. In addition, we discuss the steps he's taking to make live concerts accessible to the world via streaming during the current Corona virus situation, and how that will help to replace band's income lost from the cancellation of most live music for the foreseeable future.

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 40 - Marbin
For episode 40 I caught up with the incredible jazz-fusion band Marbin at The Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney Texas before their show. We hear from Danny and Dani about the difficulty of being a fusion band in today's jazz climate, the importance of sacrifice in order not only to be the best musician you can, but also to work on building an audience through constant touring. We hear how the guys operate the business side of the band, an important lesson about splitting responsibilities, how they approach writing music with the other members, and bass player Jon gives his perspective on being a hired musician in this arrangement. There are more great anecdotes and wisdom than I can fit in my introduction, so make sure you listen to the whole interview - these guys are not only amazing musicians, but they are extremely savvy when it comes to the business of gaining fans and navigating the gigging circuit.

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 35 - Chris Birkett & Shari Tallon/The Free Spirits
Joining me this episode is award winning producer, guitarist and fellow Brit, Chris Birkett whose album credits have collectively sold over 100 million copies, including Sinead O'Conner's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" featuring the massive Prince cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U". Chris is joined by Shari Tallon, a pianist, flutist, composer, and music educator, who together with Chris form The Free Spirits.
We have a fantastic conversation that covers both Chris and Shari's individual histories, how they met and formed the band and the creation and meaning of their new album 11:11. We also discuss Chris's thoughts on what it means to be a musician and the state of the corporate music industry today, as well as Shari's incredible work with disadvantaged and disabled children that brings the joy of music into their lives, to help tackle some of their day to day challenges.
Most importantly though, we hear about the theremin incident during the recording of John Otway's latest album on the island of Montserrat, and discover the composition of the mysterious "Green Yum"
