Music On Your Own Terms 100 - Bruce Vermett 2 / Johanna Hagarty 3 - Naked With Cold Cuts & Pot Pourri

For the last episode of 2020 we have reached the milestone of number 100! Joining me to help celebrate are my good friends, Bruce Vermett and Johanna Hagarty, both of whom have contributed greatly to the podcast and also are important people in my life in general. Bruce gives us an update on his musical activities, and talks about the experience of releasing music right at the start of the pandemic, as well as what he has in store for 2021. Johanna joins me to talk about ethics, cancel culture and Black Lives Matter, from both our perspectives, to bookend the year's events. She also gives us an update on what's been happening in her business, her own podcast that has just launched, and some really cool marketing information for creatives. We then discuss our plans and projects for 2021 and discuss what the future might hold for the creative community and the world at large.

Music On Your Own Terms 099 - Dave Swillum 3 - Waking Up In Maine

Joining me for the 99th episode of the podcast, is my good friend Dave Swillum from The Waking Up From Work Podcast. Last time I had Dave on the podcast was episode 46 and prior to that was just after we first met in episode 14. Both those episodes were joint efforts, so this time we decided to create unique episodes, and you can hear Dave's interview with me on episode 87 of his podcast, recorded on the same day. In this interview, Dave updates us on what he's been doing recently, including the amazing news that he has purchased a property near Portland, Maine, that he is renovating into a full service studio with onsite living quarters for musicians to rent out. We also learn about how he's been adapting his business to Covid, what the future holds for the podcast, and what he's been up to with his band Broadwing.

Music On Your Own Terms 092 - Gerrod Harris - Bovine Sex Is For Losers

In this episode I chat with Gerrod Harris, drummer and manager of the Toronto based hard rock band, One In The Chamber. We learn about his first foray into music in school, getting drum lessons for his birthday, and attending a drum clinic featuring Chad Smith at a young age that cemented his passion for playing. Gerrod also talks about his constant curiosity around how other bands promote their music, social media and playlist strategies to increase your band's reach, and the importance of great PR.

Music On Your Own Terms 076 - The Inner Anthem Of James Dand (Slight Return)

Joining me on the podcast once again from episode 8 is none other than my good friend James Dand! We recorded this episode a little while ago, prior to the release of his triple album, which I'm happy to report was released a few days before this episode airs. James gives some really great insight into the making of the album, including working with over twenty contributors, the logistics of legal agreements and the sessions themselves. We also discuss James' release strategy, and dig into the royalty arrangements for various governing bodies around the world. Also, as an exclusive bonus, at the end of the episode, we hear the track "Heroes Journey" that not only I contributed guitar to, but also features Hal Eisenberg on drums, who I had the pleasure of talking to recently, and we will hear from in an upcoming episode!

To go along with the launch of his triple album, James has graciously created an ebook to help you set up and work through all aspects of creating and completing a collaborative project of your own. I also contributed to this resource and I think it contains a great deal of information that will be really useful for artists creating a project while working with various other creatives and business people.

Music On Your Own Terms 071 - Dan Clayton/Fret Success - Still Being Himself

We are both guitar nerds, and we both left the UK to live in North America. Dan Clayton is an acoustics engineer based in Calgary, Canada, that also records his own music, mixes others', and is the founder of Fret Success, an online resource for guitar players looking to improve their skills. Dan shares his journey from asking his parents for saxophone lessons and inheriting his dad's guitar instead, opening for some popular touring bands in the UK, and why he moved to Canada. We also have a nerdy gear discussion about guitars, amps, plugins and pedals.

Music On Your Own Terms 063 - Storyteller - From The Darkness Into The Light

Hailing mostly from the Dallas, Texas area, Storyteller are an eclectic sounding band in terms of where they fit genre-wise, but they are extremely focused on the message they portray both musically and lyrically. As you'll discover in one of the deepest interviews I have done thus far, the emotional connection that comes out of the band is undeniable. Having witnessed first hand the intensity that the band and in particular Justin the vocalist performs with, the art being produced is incredibly authentic. In this interview, we learn what drives the music, what the guys have been up to during the lock down, and how they are managing the band with a member living in a different state.

Music On Your Own Terms 060 - Caitlin Claessens - Super Simple Subway Stories

To celebrate the 60th episode of the podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with Caitlin Claessens, who is the face of Caitie's classroom along with her co-host Tobee, on the popular YouTube channel Super Simple Play, part of Skyship Entertainment's Super Simple Songs network, whose main channel has over 23M subscribers. Caitie talks about her journey from growing up in Ontario and going to university for film production, moving to NYC and busking on the subway, to finding session vocal jobs that ended up being featured in Superbowl Commercials. We find out why she ended up returning to Canada and went on to build a successful children's educational entertainment business and subsequently got an opportunity with Skyship to become a presenter and produce her own series.
