Music On Your Own Terms 057 - Scott "Scottocaster" Harnish - The Vocal Warrior's Dr Love
This time out I talk to Scott Harnish, a music teacher, multi-instrumentalist, producer/engineer and Gene Simmons impersonator, based in Nova Scotia, Canada, that also happens to be married to Elise Besler, who I talked to in episode 42. We discuss Scott's new EP, his band Fluid, and the bands that inspire him. We also hear that on one of the recent Kiss Kruises, Scott happened to meet previous guest Nikki Sinn that we heard from all the way back in episode 2 with Tester. As well as this, we discover how he and Elise met through being mutual fans of a Canadian blues-rock band Wide Mouth Mason. This is all of course interspersed with us waxing philosophical about 80s hair metal!

Tiffany VanBoxtel is a vocal coach based out of Neenah, Wisconsin and has a podcast called The Star Singer Podcast, that helps singers with their vocal techniques and mindset to achieve their best performances. In the wake of the current COVID-19 situation, we discuss the challenges musicians face to get started doing live stream performances and what strategies and resources can be used to succeed with both mindset and technology in mind. The podcast has reached 50 episodes! Not only am I celebrating with a killer guest, but I am also releasing this on my 41st birthday. Joining me is Ryan Van Poerderooyen, drummer with both Devin Townsend Band and Project, and now his crushing new band Imonolith. We delve into how Ryan got into drumming, how he has created a career revolving around music, and the challenges and keys to successfully starting a new band and self releasing the music on the same scale as more established acts he has been touring with for decades. We also hear about Ryan's RVP Health Body and Mind community that has seen him giving powerful motivational seminars for free to supporters while on the road. Ryan tells us what drove him to lose over 50 lbs after a serious back injury and how he got back into peak performance shape for grueling shows with DTP, as well as the nine key principals he applies to his entire life in order to achieve fantastic goals and live his life to its absolute max.

Based in Sandusky, Ohio, The Mohawk Studio is a 6000 square foot, 172 year old church building, that hosts not only a full service recording studio and artist accommodations, but also a live venue with a full bar. I talk to owner, operator and producer Shawn Daley, who is also the bass player for the bands The Casket Company and Half Knocked Out. We talk about his history, how the studio and venue got started and what drives his passion for music. In addition, we discuss the steps he's taking to make live concerts accessible to the world via streaming during the current Corona virus situation, and how that will help to replace band's income lost from the cancellation of most live music for the foreseeable future.

Episode 42 sees me having a great conversation with Elise Besler, a singer and vocal coach from Halifax, Nova Scotia, that is not only an award winning vocalist but is crushing it by empowering singers and public speakers to overcome their self doubt and find their confidence to perform in front of an audience. We discuss the importance of mindset, mental and physical health, and the psychological origins of stage fright. Elise shares her history of being inspired in music by her mother, a guitar and piano teacher, how school bullies have affected her journey, overcoming her own insecurities and perfectionism and the incredible story of releasing an album for her 40th birthday along with her husband, who just happens to be a recording engineer!

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 40 - Marbin
For episode 40 I caught up with the incredible jazz-fusion band Marbin at The Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney Texas before their show. We hear from Danny and Dani about the difficulty of being a fusion band in today's jazz climate, the importance of sacrifice in order not only to be the best musician you can, but also to work on building an audience through constant touring. We hear how the guys operate the business side of the band, an important lesson about splitting responsibilities, how they approach writing music with the other members, and bass player Jon gives his perspective on being a hired musician in this arrangement. There are more great anecdotes and wisdom than I can fit in my introduction, so make sure you listen to the whole interview - these guys are not only amazing musicians, but they are extremely savvy when it comes to the business of gaining fans and navigating the gigging circuit.
