Music On Your Own Terms 066 - Just The Tip 2 - How Should You Use Your Platform?
It's been a while since I released the first "Just The Tip" episode. If you recall, it's where I pose a question to the music community to find out what their perspective is on a particular topic. This time out I decided to find out what former guests thought about using their platform to voice various points of view to possibly influence fans' opinions.
The specific wording of what I asked was this:
We have often heard the opinion of bands such as U2 and Roger Waters, being too vocal about political and social issues, sometimes to the detriment of the music. That being said, in today's climate of social injustice and political upheaval, how important is it to you to use your platform as an artist/business owner/podcaster etc, to influence people's opinion on issues? Are you concerned about losing fans/customers on less important issues, and where do you draw the line in terms of which issues you are willing to risk your business over?
This episode features responses from Elise Besler, Amie Chatterley, Anais Azul, Caleb Coonrod, Scott "Scottocaster" Harnish, and finally my good friend Latoya Cooper, the Songstress.

Music On Your Own Terms 052 - Anais Azul – Creating A New Normal
Anais Azul is a multi instrumentalist, singer and composer based in both California and Boston, that I met at last year's CD Baby DIY Musician conference. In this episode we talk about what brought Anais's family from their native Peru to the US, going to Boston University to study music and composition, and what projects and communities keep them bi-coastal. We hear about the musical projects that Anais is involved in as well as their solo music, and multifaceted performances that Anais's goal are to be as interactive as possible, with the intent of being collective healing/meditation events as much as they are musical performances. Finally we touch on the current COVID-19 situation, what Anais has done to pivot as a music teacher, and what listeners can do to shift their mindset to improve their positivity.

Music On Your Own Terms 050 - Ryan Van Poederooyen
The podcast has reached 50 episodes! Not only am I celebrating with a killer guest, but I am also releasing this on my 41st birthday. Joining me is Ryan Van Poerderooyen, drummer with both Devin Townsend Band and Project, and now his crushing new band Imonolith. We delve into how Ryan got into drumming, how he has created a career revolving around music, and the challenges and keys to successfully starting a new band and self releasing the music on the same scale as more established acts he has been touring with for decades. We also hear about Ryan's RVP Health Body and Mind community that has seen him giving powerful motivational seminars for free to supporters while on the road. Ryan tells us what drove him to lose over 50 lbs after a serious back injury and how he got back into peak performance shape for grueling shows with DTP, as well as the nine key principals he applies to his entire life in order to achieve fantastic goals and live his life to its absolute max.

Music On Your Own Terms 048 - Ian Barnett
Almost three decades ago I spent an hour almost every week for over three years learning guitar from one of South East England's top guitar teachers. These were some of my most formative years, and having the chance to interview Ian and revisit those memories has illustrated just how much of that knowledge has stuck with me on a subconscious level. Check out our chat as we reminisce, discover Ian's journey from a teenage guitar novice to a career spanning 40 years, guiding young musicians through their scales, organizing gigs for young bands at large venues, and now teaching music in a college for children with learning disabilities. Ian has a wonderful philosophy on life, education and the performance and enjoyment of music, and as a teacher has not only risen to the challenge of adapting to various learning styles, but now with the corona virus affecting our daily lives, has had to pivot in order to find ways of teaching online effectively to those students that are already impeded. On setting up this interview, I was expecting to have a conversation that included fond memories of my early teens. What I got was way more than that - a great insight into the philosophies of a fantastic teacher!

Music On Your Own Terms 045 - Just The Tip 1 - Musicians & COVID19
This is the first installment of a new feature called "Just The Tip" where I pose a question to the musicians community including past guests, to hear their perspective on a particular subject. Given the current situation with COVID19 I decided to ask the question "What effect has the corona virus had on you as a musician, and what steps and outside of the box thinking have you utilized to make up for lost revenue, and make full use of the downtime that you are currently experiencing? Let me know your thoughts on this episode, and continue the conversation on social media!

Music On Your Own Terms 044 - Johanna Hagarty/JPH Creative - Reprise
Returning to the podcast this episode is my good friend Johanna Hagarty of JPH Creative. We find out what Johanna has been up to since episode 31 in her economic development role in the local community, and about her recent move away from event production. The bulk of the discussion however, focuses on the current corona virus situation, what it means for the creative community, ways in which we can adapt in our businesses and be mindful of our mental health during these difficult times. We talk about ways in which you can "recession-proof" your business, and taking the time to learn skills to prepare yourself for the other side of the situation. We round out the discussion looking to the future, and hear a track from one of Johanna's musical clients!
