For this episode I caught up with my friend Andrew Plan who was the first person I met at the CD Baby DIY Musician Conference back in September of 2019. Andrew talks about how his dad's love of music influenced his own, how music called him away from a potential career in medicine, and his experience in various songwriting contests. We also learn about his songwriting methodologies, getting onto playlists with his music, and how he is healing people with his music, both performing in various hospitals, and also with the message in his latest single with collaborator Kristine Wriding.

This time out we welcome Bruce Ackerman, the founder of Printavo, a company whose software helps print shops just like The Skinny Armadillo, track orders, scheduling, and manage customers. Bruce talks about how he got into building apps, his background in music and printing, and takes us through how Printavo as a company, helps shops succeed, grow, and in some cases avoid shutting their doors. We also look at how bands can use business examples to propel their own organizations, and gives us some great tips in how to improve merch offerings.

After playing their song "Bad For You" on episode 67 with David Dennis, I had to get The Carolyn Sills Combo on the podcast for an interview. Namesake Carolyn and her husband Gerard, the guitar player for the band, share their history in music, working for the Santa Cruz Guitar Co., and what it means to be able to live a life dedicated to music. We hear about their life's journey from college, living in New York and touring Europe, to moving to California and forming the current group. I truly enjoyed getting to know Carolyn and Gerard, they impart some really valuable wisdom, and we also nerd out on gear!

We begin with Adam Ross, and find out what has happened with Creatures since our last episode when I was in the band, details of the release of the album, and what the future holds for live shows and new music. Rounding out the episode is my brother from another, Alan who gives us an update on his coaching experiences, starting a family, moving to Portugal and a major health event that put him in the hospital for over a month, and required him to basically learn to walk again.

Simone talks about her family's move from Scotland, getting a scholarship for classical guitar, and subsequently getting into metal and never looking back. We hear about life on the road, endorsement deals, and what it means to be signed to a record label in today's DIY world. In addition, Simone graciously shares her experiences with chronic migraines, and how she manages practicing and playing shows, along with getting the word out about the organization Migraine Australia, as well as the condition itself.

Please welcome Hal Eisenberg to the podcast! Hal contributed drums to James Dand's Empowerment Songs project, including the track "Hero's Journey" that we heard in episode 76, as well as the track at the end of this interview. Not only is Hal a drummer, but we find out about his amazing work in the New York school system as a social worker, having helped hundreds of thousands of kids find their voice, and reach their full potential in the world. Hal talks about growing up, becoming homeless and falling into drugs and alcohol, then turning his life around to become a major force in the education system. We also hear about his near death experience with COVID, and now his battle with cancer, as well as a special message of encouragement from a well known New Jersey singer. William hails from New Westminster, a city in the vicinity of Vancouver, British Columbia, and is a jazz and folk bass player and composer, that is set to release his first album in October of this year. William shares how he was exposed to jazz in high school, his history in the local music scene, and a summer he spent in Copenhagen for the sake of his own emotional growth. We take a deep dive exploring the music industry, and compare the lack of funding in the US vs the various grant sources that are available in Canada. William also shares a track from his new album at the end of the episode.

Joining me on the podcast once again from episode 8 is none other than my good friend James Dand! We recorded this episode a little while ago, prior to the release of his triple album, which I'm happy to report was released a few days before this episode airs. James gives some really great insight into the making of the album, including working with over twenty contributors, the logistics of legal agreements and the sessions themselves. We also discuss James' release strategy, and dig into the royalty arrangements for various governing bodies around the world. Also, as an exclusive bonus, at the end of the episode, we hear the track "Heroes Journey" that not only I contributed guitar to, but also features Hal Eisenberg on drums, who I had the pleasure of talking to recently, and we will hear from in an upcoming episode!
To go along with the launch of his triple album, James has graciously created an ebook to help you set up and work through all aspects of creating and completing a collaborative project of your own.
