Music On Your Own Terms 146 - Kate Schutt - A Grief Casserole
Kate Schutt exemplifies everything this podcast is about, a professional singer and musician, a guitar player with some sweet gear and awesome chops, a life coach that concentrates on mindset and mental health, all wrapped up with an attitude of continuous improvement and one that adapts to constant change. Kate shares her journey of switching from pursuing a literary degree at Harvard, to studying at Berklee and back again, then diving headlong into a music career that has seen her explore the jazz scenes in various cities around north America. We also hear about Kate's TEDx talk on the subject of how we can improve supporting others during times of grief, which draws upon the experience of caring for her late mother while she was going through her last years with terminal cancer. Finally Kate talks about her latest album that was written during and after her mother had passed, both exploring emotions from the experience as well as celebrating her mother's life.

Music On Your Own Terms 099 - Dave Swillum 3 - Waking Up In Maine
Joining me for the 99th episode of the podcast, is my good friend Dave Swillum from The Waking Up From Work Podcast. Last time I had Dave on the podcast was episode 46 and prior to that was just after we first met in episode 14. Both those episodes were joint efforts, so this time we decided to create unique episodes, and you can hear Dave's interview with me on episode 87 of his podcast, recorded on the same day. In this interview, Dave updates us on what he's been doing recently, including the amazing news that he has purchased a property near Portland, Maine, that he is renovating into a full service studio with onsite living quarters for musicians to rent out. We also learn about how he's been adapting his business to Covid, what the future holds for the podcast, and what he's been up to with his band Broadwing.

Music On Your Own Terms 068 - Joe Messina – Politics, Porpoises, and Phallic Humor
In this episode, we learn about the history of Boston based guitarist, comedian, podcaster, activist and teacher, Joe Messina. From growing up in a musical family and not wanting to follow the family business, to discovering comedy and wanting to become an aspiring writer, he was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Despite almost quitting music altogether, Joe found himself embracing music once again, teaches guitar and other instruments, and is about to release his new album Rageonomics. Joe also hosts a podcast that aims to provide a roadmap for those who feel frustrated with the slow and ineffective voting system, and want to do more in the way of direct action outside of sharing posts and signing petitions.

Music On Your Own Terms 056 - Hillarie Jason - Death Through A Lens
In this episode I have the pleasure of talking to Massachusetts based photographer Hillarie Jason. As you'll hear in the interview, I discovered her work after googling a show I had attended in Boston to find photos of the performance. Hillarie takes us on a journey from falling in love with photography in school, working in retail, to becoming a professional freelance photographer, traveling the country shooting large festivals and being featured in major publications, all as a result of a couple of flip-phone images being featured in an exhibit! We learn about what it's like to shoot a multi-day/multi-stage festival, some behind the scenes stories of difficult bands, and some great advice for those considering a life in freelance work. Join me as we discover what really drives a true artist to create.

Music On Your Own Terms 052 - Anais Azul – Creating A New Normal
Anais Azul is a multi instrumentalist, singer and composer based in both California and Boston, that I met at last year's CD Baby DIY Musician conference. In this episode we talk about what brought Anais's family from their native Peru to the US, going to Boston University to study music and composition, and what projects and communities keep them bi-coastal. We hear about the musical projects that Anais is involved in as well as their solo music, and multifaceted performances that Anais's goal are to be as interactive as possible, with the intent of being collective healing/meditation events as much as they are musical performances. Finally we touch on the current COVID-19 situation, what Anais has done to pivot as a music teacher, and what listeners can do to shift their mindset to improve their positivity.
