Music On Your Own Terms 071 - Dan Clayton/Fret Success - Still Being Himself
We are both guitar nerds, and we both left the UK to live in North America. Dan Clayton is an acoustics engineer based in Calgary, Canada, that also records his own music, mixes others', and is the founder of Fret Success, an online resource for guitar players looking to improve their skills. Dan shares his journey from asking his parents for saxophone lessons and inheriting his dad's guitar instead, opening for some popular touring bands in the UK, and why he moved to Canada. We also have a nerdy gear discussion about guitars, amps, plugins and pedals.

Music On Your Own Terms 070 - Latoya Cooper "The Songstress" - Getting Out Of Your Elephant And Being Ready For Opportunity
Returning to the podcast is my good friend Latoya Cooper, who I met at the CD Baby conference in 2019 and we heard from back in episode 23! We find out what Latoya has been up to with both her music, Music Meets The Boardroom, and her new MMB Podcast. Part of this episode also doubles as an episode for that very podcast, where Latoya interviews me about this podcast, and my work with merch at The Skinny Armadillo. Latoya shares info about her work on an upcoming film soundtrack and the books she'll be releasing, along with some important information about trademarking.

Music On Your Own Terms 069 - Al Gilliom - Piano Music In Dark Spaces
Back in April of this year, I spoke to Olympia, Washington based pianist Al Gillion. During the interview we had a great deal of technical difficulties but Al was gracious enough to re-record his answers so I could produce a full episode and tell his story. During our discussion, we learn that Al heard solo piano music in the NICU as a premature baby, and was inspired to play by his grandmother. We also discover the incredible weight of emotion that fuels Al's moving pieces, and the inspiration behind his most recent album "The Light In Dark Spaces".

Music On Your Own Terms 068 - Joe Messina – Politics, Porpoises, and Phallic Humor
In this episode, we learn about the history of Boston based guitarist, comedian, podcaster, activist and teacher, Joe Messina. From growing up in a musical family and not wanting to follow the family business, to discovering comedy and wanting to become an aspiring writer, he was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Despite almost quitting music altogether, Joe found himself embracing music once again, teaches guitar and other instruments, and is about to release his new album Rageonomics. Joe also hosts a podcast that aims to provide a roadmap for those who feel frustrated with the slow and ineffective voting system, and want to do more in the way of direct action outside of sharing posts and signing petitions.
If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants. - Isaac Newton

Music On Your Own Terms 066 - Just The Tip 2 - How Should You Use Your Platform?
It's been a while since I released the first "Just The Tip" episode. If you recall, it's where I pose a question to the music community to find out what their perspective is on a particular topic. This time out I decided to find out what former guests thought about using their platform to voice various points of view to possibly influence fans' opinions.
The specific wording of what I asked was this:
We have often heard the opinion of bands such as U2 and Roger Waters, being too vocal about political and social issues, sometimes to the detriment of the music. That being said, in today's climate of social injustice and political upheaval, how important is it to you to use your platform as an artist/business owner/podcaster etc, to influence people's opinion on issues? Are you concerned about losing fans/customers on less important issues, and where do you draw the line in terms of which issues you are willing to risk your business over?
This episode features responses from Elise Besler, Amie Chatterley, Anais Azul, Caleb Coonrod, Scott "Scottocaster" Harnish, and finally my good friend Latoya Cooper, the Songstress.

Music On Your Own Terms 065 - The Mason Adams Project - Hillbilly Hippie Funk
In this impromptu discussion, I talk with The Mason Adams Project, a Dallas based band that fuses a plethora of influences and genres to create a southern tinged, alt rock band with a mandolin....or a hillbilly hippie funk band.....I guess you'll have to listen and make up your own mind! The guys talk about how they got into music, the interesting twists of fate that led them to get together as a band, and how they write the eclectic music that defines them. We also learn that Mason has only played guitar for 5 years, yet has managed to build this project to where it is today, how dedicated of a festival follower he is and also how he infuses music into education as a special education teacher. Sit back, relax, and join me as we head into the MAP jam room!

Music On Your Own Terms 064 - Isbjörg - Pianos, Prog And Hiding Toes
I recently stumbled upon a cover video of a song by the amazing Australian band Toehider. Being floored by the musicianship of the guys playing the song, I had to check their band out, and was immediately hooked on their sound. Isbjörg are a piano driven prog band, based in Aarhus, Denmark, and the more I listen to their music, the more I feel I am going to become a superfan. The guys discuss the history of the band, how they write and talk about some innovative ways in which they have gained fans and won a spot playing a major Danish festival. We also hear about the culture of Denmark's live scene, how they overcame losing pivotal members of the band, and what the future holds once the COVID situation is over.

Music On Your Own Terms 063 - Storyteller - From The Darkness Into The Light
Hailing mostly from the Dallas, Texas area, Storyteller are an eclectic sounding band in terms of where they fit genre-wise, but they are extremely focused on the message they portray both musically and lyrically. As you'll discover in one of the deepest interviews I have done thus far, the emotional connection that comes out of the band is undeniable. Having witnessed first hand the intensity that the band and in particular Justin the vocalist performs with, the art being produced is incredibly authentic. In this interview, we learn what drives the music, what the guys have been up to during the lock down, and how they are managing the band with a member living in a different state.

Music On Your Own Terms 061 - Remain Rocks!
About an hour drive north of Fort Worth, Texas, you'll find a college town called Denton that is home to a band by the name of Remain. I sat down with band leader and front-man Caleb Coonrod to talk about the band's inception, the impetus of signing on with management, and the challenges of trying to grow a band and release a new album during a pandemic. We discuss how Caleb got into music and started gaining a following at a bar in the middle of nowhere, his long-term goals for the band, and the importance of using your voice, not just to comment on the state of the world, but to hopefully change it for the better.
