Music On Your Own Terms 079 - Simone Dow - A Voyage To The Last Continent
This episode I'm stoked to be talking with Simone Dow, guitarist with the awesome prog band Voyager from Australia. Simone talks about her family's move from Scotland, getting a scholarship for classical guitar, and subsequently getting into metal and never looking back. We hear about life on the road, endorsement deals, and what it means to be signed to a record label in today's DIY world. In addition, Simone graciously shares her experiences with chronic migraines, and how she manages practicing and playing shows, along with getting the word out about the organization Migraine Australia, as well as the condition itself.

Music On Your Own Terms 078 - Hal Eisenberg - A Runaway, Wanted Dead Or Alive
Please welcome Hal Eisenberg to the podcast! Hal contributed drums to James Dand's Empowerment Songs project, including the track "Hero's Journey" that we heard in episode 76, as well as the track at the end of this interview. Not only is Hal a drummer, but we find out about his amazing work in the New York school system as a social worker, having helped hundreds of thousands of kids find their voice, and reach their full potential in the world. Hal talks about growing up, becoming homeless and falling into drugs and alcohol, then turning his life around to become a major force in the education system. We also hear about his near death experience with COVID, and now his battle with cancer, as well as a special message of encouragement from a well known New Jersey singer. This is an incredible chat, and I was extremely inspired after I talked with Hal, I hope you will experience the same insight and invigoration after listening to Hal speak!Click here for the main show notes page!

Music On Your Own Terms 076 - The Inner Anthem Of James Dand (Slight Return)
Joining me on the podcast once again from episode 8 is none other than my good friend James Dand! We recorded this episode a little while ago, prior to the release of his triple album, which I'm happy to report was released a few days before this episode airs. James gives some really great insight into the making of the album, including working with over twenty contributors, the logistics of legal agreements and the sessions themselves. We also discuss James' release strategy, and dig into the royalty arrangements for various governing bodies around the world. Also, as an exclusive bonus, at the end of the episode, we hear the track "Heroes Journey" that not only I contributed guitar to, but also features Hal Eisenberg on drums, who I had the pleasure of talking to recently, and we will hear from in an upcoming episode!
To go along with the launch of his triple album, James has graciously created an ebook to help you set up and work through all aspects of creating and completing a collaborative project of your own. I also contributed to this resource and I think it contains a great deal of information that will be really useful for artists creating a project while working with various other creatives and business people.

Music On Your Own Terms 074 - The McGrath Project - LA Story
This episode I talk to three members of The McGrath Project, namesake Gary McGrath, Jonathan Moore and Jonathan McNary, a Fort Worth based band that is about to release a concept album influenced by albums such as Pink Floyd's The Wall, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Gary discusses moving to LA to learn studio engineering and becoming a session guitar player, touring with some big names from past decades, and returning to his hometown of Fort Worth to form a new version of the McGrath Project and record new music. We learn from both Jonathan's, about how they got started on their respective instruments, and the amount of dedication that has lead them to pursue a full time career in music.

Music On Your Own Terms 071 - Dan Clayton/Fret Success - Still Being Himself
We are both guitar nerds, and we both left the UK to live in North America. Dan Clayton is an acoustics engineer based in Calgary, Canada, that also records his own music, mixes others', and is the founder of Fret Success, an online resource for guitar players looking to improve their skills. Dan shares his journey from asking his parents for saxophone lessons and inheriting his dad's guitar instead, opening for some popular touring bands in the UK, and why he moved to Canada. We also have a nerdy gear discussion about guitars, amps, plugins and pedals.

Returning to the podcast is my good friend Latoya Cooper, who I met at the CD Baby conference in 2019 and we heard from back in episode 23! We find out what Latoya has been up to with both her music, Music Meets The Boardroom, and her new MMB Podcast. Part of this episode also doubles as an episode for that very podcast, where Latoya interviews me about this podcast, and my work with merch at The Skinny Armadillo. Latoya shares info about her work on an upcoming film soundtrack and the books she'll be releasing, along with some important information about trademarking.

Music On Your Own Terms 069 - Al Gilliom - Piano Music In Dark Spaces
Back in April of this year, I spoke to Olympia, Washington based pianist Al Gillion. During the interview we had a great deal of technical difficulties but Al was gracious enough to re-record his answers so I could produce a full episode and tell his story. During our discussion, we learn that Al heard solo piano music in the NICU as a premature baby, and was inspired to play by his grandmother. We also discover the incredible weight of emotion that fuels Al's moving pieces, and the inspiration behind his most recent album "The Light In Dark Spaces".

Music On Your Own Terms 068 - Joe Messina – Politics, Porpoises, and Phallic Humor
In this episode, we learn about the history of Boston based guitarist, comedian, podcaster, activist and teacher, Joe Messina. From growing up in a musical family and not wanting to follow the family business, to discovering comedy and wanting to become an aspiring writer, he was then diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Despite almost quitting music altogether, Joe found himself embracing music once again, teaches guitar and other instruments, and is about to release his new album Rageonomics. Joe also hosts a podcast that aims to provide a roadmap for those who feel frustrated with the slow and ineffective voting system, and want to do more in the way of direct action outside of sharing posts and signing petitions.
