Music On Your Own Terms 146 - Kate Schutt - A Grief Casserole
Kate Schutt exemplifies everything this podcast is about, a professional singer and musician, a guitar player with some sweet gear and awesome chops, a life coach that concentrates on mindset and mental health, all wrapped up with an attitude of continuous improvement and one that adapts to constant change. Kate shares her journey of switching from pursuing a literary degree at Harvard, to studying at Berklee and back again, then diving headlong into a music career that has seen her explore the jazz scenes in various cities around north America. We also hear about Kate's TEDx talk on the subject of how we can improve supporting others during times of grief, which draws upon the experience of caring for her late mother while she was going through her last years with terminal cancer. Finally Kate talks about her latest album that was written during and after her mother had passed, both exploring emotions from the experience as well as celebrating her mother's life.

Music On Your Own Terms 142 - Elementals, Intercontinentals, & Thunderpetz
Hailing from Italy and Turkey, attending Berklee and the Musicians Institute, and now based in Los Angeles, Thunderpetz are truly a fusion of many styles and cultures, both musically and otherwise. In this inspiring conversation, I chat to brothers Dandy on guitar and Lorenzo on drums, as well as Guney on synths, about this brand new project that takes 80s virtuoso rock and merges it with a modern electronic sound to create Thunderpetz. The guys talk about their history of moving to the US to go to school, the various projects they've been involved in, and passionately discuss the artists that inspired them to dedicate their life to music. We also learn about the challenges of being a musician in today's crowded world, and what it takes to get your music heard with so many other people trying to do the same thing.

Music On Your Own Terms 119 - Austin Zhang - Bravely Discovering The Sounds Of NYC
In this episode I talk to Austin Zhang, a Texas native that moved to NYC to go to college, and immerse himself in the Jazz scene. We hear about Austin's history in music with guitar, then switching to saxophone and being named number one at the Texas All State Jazz competition, and subsequently being invited to play gigs in Deep Ellum, all while still in high school. We also hear about the entrepreneurial drive that most likely stemmed from seeing his parent's property investments, an experience which led him to create a production company that offers a digital venue helping local jazz artists make a living from paid streaming concerts, and help expose NY jazz to the world. Austin's story is extremely inspiring in terms of musical drive and ability, but also successfully pairing that with his business sense and entrepreneurial spirit. I look forward to what Austin will accomplish in the future!

Music On Your Own Terms 048 - Ian Barnett
Almost three decades ago I spent an hour almost every week for over three years learning guitar from one of South East England's top guitar teachers. These were some of my most formative years, and having the chance to interview Ian and revisit those memories has illustrated just how much of that knowledge has stuck with me on a subconscious level. Check out our chat as we reminisce, discover Ian's journey from a teenage guitar novice to a career spanning 40 years, guiding young musicians through their scales, organizing gigs for young bands at large venues, and now teaching music in a college for children with learning disabilities. Ian has a wonderful philosophy on life, education and the performance and enjoyment of music, and as a teacher has not only risen to the challenge of adapting to various learning styles, but now with the corona virus affecting our daily lives, has had to pivot in order to find ways of teaching online effectively to those students that are already impeded. On setting up this interview, I was expecting to have a conversation that included fond memories of my early teens. What I got was way more than that - a great insight into the philosophies of a fantastic teacher!

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 40 - Marbin
For episode 40 I caught up with the incredible jazz-fusion band Marbin at The Guitar Sanctuary in McKinney Texas before their show. We hear from Danny and Dani about the difficulty of being a fusion band in today's jazz climate, the importance of sacrifice in order not only to be the best musician you can, but also to work on building an audience through constant touring. We hear how the guys operate the business side of the band, an important lesson about splitting responsibilities, how they approach writing music with the other members, and bass player Jon gives his perspective on being a hired musician in this arrangement. There are more great anecdotes and wisdom than I can fit in my introduction, so make sure you listen to the whole interview - these guys are not only amazing musicians, but they are extremely savvy when it comes to the business of gaining fans and navigating the gigging circuit.
