Music On Your Own Terms 044 - Johanna Hagarty/JPH Creative - Reprise
Returning to the podcast this episode is my good friend Johanna Hagarty of JPH Creative. We find out what Johanna has been up to since episode 31 in her economic development role in the local community, and about her recent move away from event production. The bulk of the discussion however, focuses on the current corona virus situation, what it means for the creative community, ways in which we can adapt in our businesses and be mindful of our mental health during these difficult times. We talk about ways in which you can "recession-proof" your business, and taking the time to learn skills to prepare yourself for the other side of the situation. We round out the discussion looking to the future, and hear a track from one of Johanna's musical clients!

Music On Your Own Terms 042 - Elise Besler/The Vocal Warrior
Episode 42 sees me having a great conversation with Elise Besler, a singer and vocal coach from Halifax, Nova Scotia, that is not only an award winning vocalist but is crushing it by empowering singers and public speakers to overcome their self doubt and find their confidence to perform in front of an audience. We discuss the importance of mindset, mental and physical health, and the psychological origins of stage fright. Elise shares her history of being inspired in music by her mother, a guitar and piano teacher, how school bullies have affected her journey, overcoming her own insecurities and perfectionism and the incredible story of releasing an album for her 40th birthday along with her husband, who just happens to be a recording engineer!

Music On Your Own Terms 041 - Suzanne Paulinski/The Rockstar Advocate
For Episode 41 I talk to Suzanne Paulinski, a mindset coach that helps music-preneurs with the business side of their music and also helps them understand the importance of mental and physical health. Last summer at the CD Baby conference, I attended Suz's seminar about overcoming overwhelm and was inspired by the achievement of how she was able to build a successful business while only being able to work 2 hours a day due to her battle with Lymes Disease. Suz talks about her history in the music business, virtually burning out at a young age and how that has fueled her passion of bringing the importance of focus to her clients. We talk about the psychology of language and how it plays a vital role in our success, and also she talks about getting the word out to a wider audience with her podcast, the Music-preneur Mindset Podcast. Keep an ear out for Suz's dog Pepper that makes an appearance by snoring in the background!

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 39 - Chase The Comet
Episode 39 features Nika Comet, one half of Chase The Comet, an LA-based rock/metal duo that made a brave jump to move from their home of Moscow, Russia, to follow the American dream of hustle and entrepreneurship to bring their music to the world. Nika talks us through growing up in a theatrical family, being in bands in high school, and working as session musicians. She tells us the challenges of finding band members with the same goals and vision, why being a duo is the best situation right now, and also she shares her experiences with mental health. This interview is a great insight into an upcoming band with great songs, and illustrates the importance of sacrifice and the drive to see your ultimate vision through.

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 38 - POEM
Kicking off February's interviews is Greek prog-metal band POEM. I talked to guitarist Laurence, and drummer Stavros, about their musical history, touring with Amorphis, and a special insight into what it's like to party on the bus with the band Textures. We dig into the state of the industry, explore the challenges of going on the road, and hear how the guys are able to make a living, while building the band to a viable financially stable position. POEM's music is squarely in my wheelhouse they are definitely a band I will be keeping tabs. Make sure you check them out!

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 37 - Chris "Peapod" Daher/On The Radar Podcast
Joining me for episode 37 from darkest Toledo Ohio, is Chris "Peapod" Daher, a radio personality for 100.7 The Zone, who has a killer podcast called "On The Radar" that promotes musical acts coming through to and from the greater Midwest area. Our discussion meanders through his passion for music that pushes him to find out each musician's story much like my own, his journey from being bullied in school to becoming a well known radio host, and the responsibilities and pitfalls of having a platform to address social concerns whether that be radio, a podcast, or a band's fanbase. This episode is not only a great insight into the workings of a popular music podcast, but also a fantastic exploration of personal growth. Check out Chris's music choice from Toledo area band "Castle No Kings" with their track, "Thinning Veil".

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 34 - Joe Leach/Riff City Guitar
Right before the holiday I talked to Joe Leach, owner of Riff City Guitar, a Minnesota based guitar store that was the first US retailer to bring the Chapman guitars brand to America, and unfortunately has recently closed its doors. We discuss Joe's background in both sales and music; his journey in entrepreneurship and the different businesses he's been a part of and look at the the retail industry at large. We talk about how important it is to figure out your "why" and I'm extremely grateful to Joe for sharing with us his experience with depression, anxiety and addiction, and his insight into how he's managed to overcome some things and live with others. Music is courtesy of the band Unturned, featuring Joe's son Will on guitar!

Music On Your Own Terms Episode 23 - Latoya Cooper, The Songstress!
After meeting at the CD Baby DIY musician conference in Austin recently and hearing how great her voice is, I just had to get Latoya on the podcast. Not only is her music eclectic stylistically, which is right up my alley, but she just happens to run Music Meets the Boardroom, an organization that provides training for musicians and other creatives, helping them gain skills to manage the business side of their music career. As well as sitting down together to talk about music and business, Latoya graciously shares her struggles with depression, her journey from singing as a child, gaining four (yes 4) degrees including an MBA, feeling unfulfilled in her otherwise successful data analysis career, to now gearing up to pursue music full time and becoming an advocate for legislation for musicians' rights in association with the Recording Academy/Grammys. Phew! This one's a doozie!
